How are you supposed to know exactly what supplements will help you with Hashimoto’s?  I remember feeling overwhelmed and confused.  

It is different for everyone, but some supplements are common among people autoimmune thyroid disease.

While healing from Hashimoto’s, I tried many different supplements and spent hundreds of dollars trying to determine what would aid my healing.  I am pretty sure I tried everything!  Hopefully, my experience can save you from needing to do the same.

Looking back, I can tell you the most important thing is healing your leaky gut.  You can read more about this in my Thyroid Journey (Series of 8) Part 7: Healing My Leaky Gut Stopped Hashimoto’s.  This included going grain free while eating fresh organic fruits and vegetables, and organic, pasture raised meat and eggs.

Outside of that, there are 9 main supplements to heal from Hashimoto’s that helped me.  There are going to be some differences in what each of us need, but I think knowing my experience could be helpful to determine what is important for you.

SUPPLEMENTS TO HEAL FROM HASHIMOTO’S

Most of these supplements and brands were added by my functional medical doctor all except the zinc, OptiFerin-C, and selenium.  I added the zinc, OptiFerin-C, and selenium on my own and found them to be helpful.

Here is the list of supplements (and brands I used) that I found helped me the most.

  1. Super EFA Capsules –  Omega-3 fatty acids are known to help balance Omega-6 fatty acids and calm inflammation.  Intestinal inflammation is one of the main causes along with a leaky gut for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
  2. Moducare – This was added to help modulate my raging and hypersensitive immune system to try to calm the attack on my thyroid.
  3. Ribes Nigrum – This is a gentle supplement for the adrenals- I wanted to include this because many people have adrenal fatigue that is developed while having Hashimoto’s.  In the end, I found that I was one of the lucky ones that did not develop severe adrenal fatigue.
  4. Thorne Vitamin D3/K2 – Most people with Hashimoto’s have low levels of Vitamin D and sometimes Vitamin K2 as well.  This helps to raise back up the vitamin D levels- something that can take quite a while to happen.
  5. Thyroxal – This supplement was developed to provide quality glandular, herbal, and nutritional compounds to support healthy thyroid function. I appreciated that it came all wrapped together in one supplement instead of having to find it all separately.
  6. HMF Forte Capsules – Probiotics play a important role by helping to rebuild the gut with beneficial flora and bacteria to promote gut health.
  7. Swanson Zinc Picolinate – Zinc can be helpful for supporting T3 levels while suffering from Hashimoto’s.
  8. OptiFerin-C – This supplement helps to raise low ferritin levels that come along with low iron usually found in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. You can read more about ferritin in Why is Ferritin So Important?
  9. SelenoExcell – There are numerous studies finding that supplementation with selenium reduces thyroid autoimmune antibodies.

DIET AND SUPPLEMENTS TO HEAL FROM HASHIMOTO’S

Overall, these 9 supplements to heal from Hashimoto’s can aid you to reestablish depleted levels of vitamins, minerals, and gut flora, but they can’t work miracles.  The most important part is healing your leaky gut and addressing the internal inflammation. If you are healing your gut with your diet, then you should begin to see your situation improve rather quickly- especially in how you feel.  My energy returned and I found that I wasn’t dragging through each day looking for a good time to take a nap.

I highly recommend reading  Izabella Wentz’s book, HASHIMOTO’S THYROIDITIS: LIFESTYLE INTERVENTIONS FOR FINDING AND TREATING THE ROOT CAUSE.  She talks a lot about supplements that help with Hashimoto’s disease as well as how to address a leaky gut and adrenal fatigue.

I specifically noticed the biggest shift in my energy levels and drop in my thyroid antibodies when I committed to a gluten free diet.  The drop in my thyroid antibodies was significant and shocking.  You can read more about that Part 5: A Gluten Free Diet Can Help Hashimoto’s.

Gut infections can also set in when your immune system is overworked and off balance- to help with this I also took olive leaf extract, which I talk more about in The Olive Leaf as Medicine?  I wanted to mention this because this also caused a significant drop in my thyroid antibodies after 3 months of taking it daily.

When all is said and done- you will become passionate about your health and wellness once you have to fight for it.  It is amazing the changes you can make in your life- especially when you find that that our bodies were made to heal!
