Moringa is a superfood that is rich in antioxidants and nutrition, however, it is virtually a secret. Here are 6 Superfood Benefits of Moringa.

Moringa Tree

Ever heard of Moringa?  It’s a pretty amazing little “miracle” tree.

Moringa is scientifically known as Moringa Oleifera, but is often referred to as the “drumstick tree”.  It is native to northern India and has been used for many generations to fight against diabetes, heart disease, anemia, arthritis, liver disease, respiratory illness, and even digestive distress.

Many people commonly refer to it as a superfood – with good reason.  It is packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and several other beneficial compounds.

Let me tell you about some of the wonderful benefits of Moringa!

6 SUPERFOOD BENEFITS OF MORINGA

1. Moringa Is Full Of Nutrition

Moringa is a wonderful source of iron, calcium, and fiber.  It is one of the most nutrient dense plants on the planet. Many call it the “tree of life” and find it beneficial for detoxification.  Some people even use it to manage post workout inflammation.

When comparing Moringa to Kale, you will find that Moringa contains 2x the protein, 3x the calcium, 4x the iron, and 2.5x the fiber.  Talk about a convenient way to get your greens!

2. Packed with Antioxidants

Antioxidants are compounds that protect your body against free radicals.  Moringa contains one of the largest antioxidant contents of any food. The capacity of antioxidants in foods are measured in ORAC units.

Moringa has a value of 157,000 which is 6x the antioxidants of Goji berries score at 25,300 ORAC value.  Here is a cool chart listing ORAC values of several foods although it fails to list Moringa.

Antioxidants are necessary to protect, repair, and prevent damage to cells.  They minimize the aging process of skin and counteract the effects of oxidative stress and free radicals.

3. Can Lower Blood Sugar

High blood sugar can prove to be a major health problem and a contributing factor to diabetes.

Moringa is known for being used in traditional medicines for fighting diabetes.   Many recent scientific studies have proven that Moringa can be used successfully to treat diabetes and has been confirmed to lower lipid (cholesterol) and blood glucose levels.

4. Reduces Inflammation

Inflammation is a protective response to injury or infection to our body.  However, if inflammation continues over time it can become chronic and contribute to major health concerns such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or cancer.

Moringa works to reduce inflammation by suppressing inflammatory proteins and enzymes in the body.  Using a highly concentrated amount of Moringa leaf can significantly reduce cell inflammation.

The main anti-inflammatory compounds in the Moringa leaves, pods and seeds are thought to be isothiocyanates.

5. Protects Your Liver

The Moringa flowers and leaves contain large levels of polyphenols which protect the liver against oxidation, toxicity, and damage.

Our liver is the organ we use for detoxifying our blood, to metabolise fructose and fat, process nutrients, and produce bile.  We are only capable of performing these functions with normal liver enzyme levels.

Moringa oil is able to restore liver enzymes to normal levels while reducing oxidative stress and increasing protein content in the liver.

6. Immunity Booster

One of the best benefits of Moringa is its power to boost your immune system.   A healthy immune system is important for avoiding infections and illness.

Moringa Oleifera is a source rich in iron and vitamin A which are both critical to a normally functioning immune system.

Several studies have ongoing research about the benefit of Moringa to fight against several types of cancer.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH MORINGA

When I first learned about Moringa, I was pretty impressed with all the wonderful benefits.  However, when I first tried it I was not too impressed with the taste. It took me a couple of different tries with Moringa to work out my taste issues.

Moringa is generally available as a green powder, capsules, or tea.  I like this moringa green powder.  It is best to use in smoothies in my opinion, but some people like to sprinkle it over their food.  Sometimes I will add it to my morning green smoothie.

Fresh Moringa leaves are mild in flavor so they are delicious roasted or in a salad.  The tree and or seeds can be found at the Echo Farm.  My Mom grows moringa trees in KY and keeps her young trees indoors during the winter.  Here is a picture she sent me below of one of her Moringa plants.

It’s super cool stuff, but be aware that the dried leaves can have a pretty strong flavor in large amounts.   Be sure not to over do it! I also found that I enjoy drinking this Moringa Green tea.

You can find a way to easily mix it into your daily routine and enjoy all the benefits found in Moringa.  What’s not to love?

I would love to hear how you like to use moringa!
